Newcastle United battled from beginning to end and took three points against Manchester United.

After dropping into the relegation zone, Newcastle United needed a victory to elevate themselves to safety. That’s exactly what they got, topping Manchester United 1-0 at St. James’ Park.

Top Toons

Martin Dubravka: What a debut! The goalkeeper made his Newcastle United and Premier League debut against a top club. He responded by making a handful of massive saves and calmly controlling the ball under pressure.

Jonjo Shelvey: He’s the best player at Newcastle United again. Shelvey’s been in great form and played arguably his best match of the season today. He moved the ball around and worked tirelessly defensively.

Mohamed Diame: Shelvey’s midfield partner stayed in great form. He made important interceptions and began countless attacks from deep in the midfield.

Matt Ritchie: He picked a perfect time to score his first goal of the season. The hardworking winger calmly knocked home a great opportunity for the lone tally of the match.

Mediocre Magpies

DeAndre Yedlin: The speedy American fullback got beat on a couple long passes throughout the match. Alexis Sanchez also worked past him to create dangerous moments, while he did work hard to quell the attacking moves.

Kenedy: While it wasn’t a poor performance from the Chelsea loanee, it was a letdown after his previous appearances. He missed a few open passes and squandered a couple exciting counter attacks. Kenedy was gassed late as well.

More from Newcastle Toons

-The midfield duo of Shelvey and Diame was top class vs. the Red Devils. They both were unafraid to get physical in defense or build an attack from just in front of the backline. This pairing is working well and should be the first choice tandem moving forward.

-Dubravka is a Newcastle United legend after one match. While that’s a bit of an exaggeration, he made a name for himself in his debut. He’s tall, agile, and collected under pressure. Don’t be surprised if the club makes his move permanent this summer.

-The tackle on Dwight Gayle was clearly a penalty. I will have an article on the referee’s treatment of Newcastle United this season tomorrow.

-The Magpies’ backline made some big saves to assist their goalkeeper. Anthony Martial had two efforts turned away on one possession by Dwight Gayle.
