Newcastle United will not go quietly into that good night.

Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez entered Sunday’s match against Manchester United 18th in the table, as earlier results dropped them into the relegation places. But with a difficult task in front of them, the Magpies earned a famous win that will see them full of confidence moving forward.

Newcastle secured a 1-0 victory over the Red Devils at St. James’ Park, climbing up to 13th place. Matt Ritchie scored the second-half winner, and an impressive debut for goalkeeper Martin Dubravka highlighted a special day for the Toon.

The match began well enough for the home side, finding chances at goal in the opening minutes.

Frustration would arrive closer to the break, as a foul on Dwight Gayle in the penalty area did not see a call from referee Craig Pawson.

It was the type of moment that could deflate a team’s effort, but that was not the case for the Geordie club in this fixture.

The second half

Still scoreless at half-time, the visitors came out controlling possession and working passes into dangerous areas.

Manchester defender Chris Smalling was booked for diving in the 64th minute, setting up a free-kick that would send the Toon Army into hysterics.

Ritchie found himself in the perfect position, and put away a vital goal for the Magpies. Nervous moments followed late in the game, but Benitez’s side were able to hang on for all three points.

A wonderful collective desire was at the core of this scoreline, and fans will hope that Sunday was a true turning point away from possible relegation this season. The Toon will travel to AFC Bournemouth in their next league encounter on February 24.
