Newcastle United’s lineup was compiled from our staff’s predictions. In a 4-2-3-1 formation, it was Darlow; Yedlin, Lascelles, Clark, Dummett; Shelvey, Diame; Atsu, Perez, Kenedy; Slimani. Manchester United’s squad was unchanged from their win over Huddersfield Town last week.

Early on, neither side gained a significant edge. Poor passing from Newcastle United in their final third squandered a few potentially dangerous attacks. Antonio Valencia sent a solid cross in towards Romelu Lukaku, but Karl Darlow was able to snatch it away from the striker’s path.

Mohamed Diame’s shot from outside the area at the quarter hour mark was the first effort on frame for either club, and it was easily collected by David de Gea.

Two minutes later, Lukaku tapped a header over Darlow into the goal, but he was ruled offside. Ayoze Perez would sky a 30th minute shot well over the bar. At the half, Newcastle United led in shots but trailed in possession.

After an active first half, Lukaku almost opened the scoring early in the second half. His shot in the 48th minute rang the post. Alexis Sanchez would also hit the frame of the goal in the 70th minute. Both Newcastle United wingers were replaced, with Matt Ritchie and Jacob Murphy coming on in the second half. Mikel Merino subbing on for Shelvey was Rafa’s final move of the match.

Possessing the ball in dangerous areas late, a Merino blast wide of the goal was the final shot of the match. The clubs finished level with Manchester United holding 57% of possession and Newcastle United firing six shots to the Red Devils 3.
