What to watch for: Newcastle United vs. Manchester United

“I got my feet on the street but I can’t stop flying, my head’s in the clouds but at least I’m trying…”
Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez face an uncertain future together, as the final 12 games of the 2017-18 season must produce enough points to remain in the Premier League. Certain matches offer more opportunity than others for a positive result, but Sunday’s contest against second-place Manchester United will not be easy.
Kick-off is set for 2:15PM local time at St. James’ Park, as the Magpies aim to perform at a more consistent level versus the Red Devils. The reverse fixture at Old Trafford this past November saw a first-half lead for Benitez’s side disappear, resulting in a 4-1 loss.
Newcastle enter following a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace, while manager José Mourinho’s squad are coming off a 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town.
The exciting aspect for the fans is the possibility for two Toon debuts in the match, with deadline-day signings Islam Slimani and Martin Dubravka potentially being involved.
Still working his way towards full fitness, Slimani will likely be utilised as a second-half substitute. The Algerian international will feel a sense of pressure to perform at a high level, but will definitely provide a boost to the team’s attack.
Both Kenedy and Mohamed Diame have been in good form. However, Manchester United provide a very tough test this weekend.
Conservative tactics
Similar to the club’s matches against Manchester City earlier in the campaign, the Toon Army should expect to see a defensive approach to the game from Benitez’s side.
The visitors boast significant quality with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and new arrival Alexis Sánchez. The Magpies must count on disciplined defending and striking on counter-attacks effectively when possible.

Newcastle United and Rafa Benitez need points as they fight to avoid relegation. Unfortunately, Sunday’s match does not offer the best opportunity at achieving that objective.
