On a busy day Tyneside yesterday, Newcastle United had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Burnley. After Joselu missed a penalty in the first half, Jamaal Lascelles put the Magpies up 1-0. Unfortunately, a Burnley corner led to a Karl Darlow own goal in the 85th minute.

Top Toons

Kenedy: What a debut! The Chelsea loanee was a spark for Newcastle United’s attack. His first shot drilled the post and he was tackled in the area to draw the first half penalty. His delivery on crosses and corners was quality, tallying an assist on Lascelles’ goal.

Jamaal Lascelles: The captain came up big for Newcastle United, blasting home a corner for a crucial headed goal.

Mohamed Diame: Now always a consistent performer, Diame’s outing vs. Burnley was a positive one. He helped control the midfield for the Toon.

Mediocre Magpies

Joselu: Another deflating performance for the Spanish striker. He couldn’t convert a penalty in the first half and failed to bury an easy chance in the second 45 minutes.

Karl Darlow: While the first save on the corner was strong, his miscue knocked the ball into the back of the net for Burnley’s equalizer.

Mikel Merino: The midfielder didn’t seem up to match fitness, tired and lacking his usual quality. He was overshadowed by his partner Diame.

Quick Kicks

-I was surprised at the dropping of Jonjo Shelvey. He’s been in great form lately and could’ve been a vital piece for the Toon yesterday.

– Joselu continues to prove he’s not the finisher Newcastle United needs at striker. He misses chance after chance and hopefully when Islam Slimani is fit, we won’t see much of him.

-Darlow’s error wasn’t as egregious as some he’s made in the past, but it was very unfortunate to cost Newcastle two points at home.

-While this was a draw, it feels like a loss for the Magpies. These are matches they need to win, not concede late.

What’s Next?

The Toon will travel to face Crystal Palace on Sunday. Sitting two points and one position ahead of Newcastle United, Roy Hodgson’s side split points midweek with West Ham United.
