The signing of Nicolai Jorgensen seems unlikely for Newcastle United. Even if the Magpies are able to complete this transfer, is Jorgensen the best option for a striker?

Two days remain in the transfer window and Newcastle United have been inactive yet again. Thus far, the Magpies have only been able to secure the talents of the Brazilian winger from Chelsea, Kenedy, on loan for the rest of the season.

While this signing has been welcomed and appreciated by Rafa Benitez and the Toon Army, Newcastle United have not purchased a much-needed striker. The Magpies are currently the sixth worst goal-scoring club in the Premier League and that statistic does not bode well for a team involved in a relegation battle.

Several names from other Premier League clubs have been linked to Newcastle United to boost the struggling attack, and the most recent name associated with the club has been Nicolai Jorgensen of Feyenoord.

Nicolai Jorgensen: Player Profile

The Denmark international and Feyenoord striker has earned a positive reputation in the Eredivisie as the 27-year-old led the league in scoring in the 2016-17 season with 21 goals. In addition to his club-level form, Jorgensen has also scored eight goals in his 28 appearances for Denmark.

Standing at 6’3″ (1.93m), Jorgensen has a large frame that he uses to his advantage to win aerial battles in midfield and in the penalty area. Jorgensen is not a great tactical dribbler, but he has sufficient skill to turn away from defenders to create a scoring opportunity for himself or a team-mate.

This season, Jorgensen has scored seven goals in 14 appearances for Feyenoord. His movement off the ball enables him to be on the receiving end of many assists. The question that needs to be raised, however, is whether Jorgensen is the ideal striker for Newcastle United.

Worth the Hype?

Quick answer: no. With that being said, however, Jorgensen would undoubtedly be an upgrade from Joselu and Dwight Gayle. It is true that Jorgensen has the capability to score several goals, but not in a league as competitive as the Premier League.

The Eredivisie is a respectable league as it is comprised of some notable clubs, such as Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, and Feyenoord, but it is a league that rising stars seek to leave to test their talents in major leagues.

Most of the goals that Jorgensen has scored for Feyenoord have been Chicharito-esque poacher goals against mediocre defenders and goalkeepers. Because of his frame and movement off the ball, Jorgensen would certainly find the back of the net in England, but he is not the type of striker who can score between seven and nine goals in 14 matches to save the season for Newcastle United.

The Magpies have expressed interest in the striker and have made bids to bring him to Tyneside, but Feyenoord has rejected the offers. Listed at £20 million, Feyenoord has supposedly set an ultimatum for Newcastle United to meet their asking price by January 29, a deadline which has passed.
