As we near the end of the January transfer window, we grade the Newcastle United signings from the summer window.

Newcastle United are looking to close this January transfer window with an important addition or two. Before this window closes, here are letter grades for each of the signings from last summer.

Christian Atsu: B+

2017/18 EPL stats: 20 appearances, two goals, two assists

Newcastle United signed the speedy winger to a permanent deal after he played last season at Tyneside on loan. He’s been a dangerous player in the attack and has established himself as the first-choice winger.

Joselu: D

2017/18 EPL stats: 21 appearances, four goals, one assist

The Spanish striker has been a major flop for the Magpies. While he does lead the club in goals, he’s missed many more shots than he’s made.

Florian Lejeune: C

2017/18 EPL stats: 12 appearances, three yellow cards

A very promising prospect this preseason, Lejeune has battled injuries and inconsistent play this season. He’s no longer a first-choice option at centre-back and will hopefully return to his preseason form when he’s fully healthy.

Javier Manquillo: C+

2017/18 EPL stats: 19 appearances, two yellow cards

He filled in well at the beginning of the season for DeAndre Yedlin at right-back. The speed and skill of the Premier League have seemed to be too much for him, especially lately.

Mikel Merino: B

2017/18 EPL stats: 12 appearances, one goal, one assist

An afterthought at Borussia Dortmund, Merino impressed early for Newcastle United. He’s a high-level distributor and not afraid to win the ball back in the midfield. He’s dealt with a bad back injury and hasn’t been at full health for most of the season.

Jacob Murphy: B

2017/18 EPL stats: 10 appearances, one goal, one assist

The top money signing of the summer has recently shown flashes of his worth. He’s fighting for time over Matt Ritchie on the wing and brings pace and creativity on the ball. Murphy knocked home his first Premier League goal against the mighty Manchester City last week.
