Toon Takeaways from Newcastle United’s 3-1 loss to Man City
Newcastle United got handled at the Etihad by Manchester City.
Sergio Aguero notched a hat-trick as Manchester City defeated Newcastle United 3-1 earlier today. Jacob Murphy scored his first goal as a Magpies player in the second half.
Top Toons
Jamaal Lascelles: The captain made countless clearances and important stops. He helped keep the match close early.
Jonjo Shelvey: Another positive performance from the midfielder. He worked hard in distribution and set up a couple dangerous moments.
Jacob Murphy: After a slow first half, the winger played with more purpose in the second half. He opened his Newcastle United scoring account with a calm finish on the break.
Mediocre Magpies
Javier Manquillo: Starting in place of DeAndre Yedlin, he continuously tried to do too much with the ball at his feet. He lost possession on multiple occasions in the first half. Manquillo was beaten by Raheem Sterling and pushed him down in the box to give Manchester City a penalty, which they converted.
Joselu: If not for his poor passing, you might not have realized Joselu played today. He was a non-factor in the attack and did little to help his team in any way.

-Rafa Benitez did not sit as deep as anticipated and results were positive early. Unfortunately, Man. City dominated the ball at an epic level and simply outskilled the Toon.
-Karl Darlow was solid. He made some big saves and came awfully close to stopping Aguero’s penalty.
-I would’ve loved to see Yedlin earlier. Dummett and Manquillo provided nothing in the attack, an area that the speedy American can help in.
-Ciaran Clark’s assist on the Murphy goal was lovely. Perfectly timed and weighted pass.
-In an otherwise pedestrian performance, Mo Diame had a moment of brilliance, pushing into the penalty area and testing Ederson twice.
