Newcastle were not about to let this scoreline get out-of-hand, and they didn’t. But it wasn’t really enough.

Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez knew that the challenge would be tough on Wednesday evening, hosting first-place Manchester City. Even with a conservative approach and formation, the Magpies fell just as 17 consecutive opponents had previously.

Pep Guardiola’s side defeated Newcastle 1-0 off a Raheem Sterling goal in the first half, and controlled almost all aspects of the game throughout 90 minutes. With almost 80(!) percent of the possession throughout most of the encounter, the visitors were on the front foot early and often.

The team selection from Benitez told the story immediately. With a 5-4-1 line-up set to stifle City’s potent attack, Newcastle players were expected to keep the action in front of them.

And the plan was working, until Kevin de Bruyne and Sterling struck in the 31st minute for the match’s only goal.

The rest of the first half followed the same pattern, as the home side kept numbers behind the ball.

Rolando Aarons did come close to the equaliser before half-time, but City entered the break with an advantage.

The Toon Army was certainly hoping for a bit more in the final third after a dreadful opening act.

The second half

Possession and control was still with City, but Newcastle were not without their chances. As United’s defence continued to frustrate Guardiola’s team, the visitors began to feel the pressure.

Substitute Dwight Gayle came close in the game’s final moments, but it was a night where United could not find the back of the net.

There will be no rest for the weary, with Newcastle returning to the pitch at St. James’ Park on Saturday afternoon against Brighton & Hove Albion.
