Toon Takeaways from Newcastle United’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal
It was another disappointing result for Newcastle United, their fourth straight defeat.
Newcastle United could not come away with the upset on the road against Arsenal, dropping a 1-0 result at the Emirates. Mesut Ozil’s volley in the first half was unstoppable and the lone goal of the match.
Top Toons
Matt Ritchie: He was the definition of a super sub in this one. He came on first for Newcastle United and immediately began pushing the attack, sending quality balls into the box, and pressuring Arsenal defenders.
Joselu: While he didn’t score or create too many dangerous chances, the Spanish forward did a great job winning the aerial duels and keeping possession for Newcastle. He also had a decent strike deflected out for a corner.
Mikel Merino: His quick passing and activity drove Newcastle United for much of the match. Early on in the second half, he even made a couple ventures into the area.
Mediocre Magpies:
Ayoze Perez: Extremely poor from the forward today. He tried to do too much dribbling in his own half and miscued two incredible chances late.
Javier Manquillo: He let Hector Bellerin get behind him on a couple of occasions and also didn’t pick up Alex Iwobi, who thankfully couldn’t capitalize on the poor marking.
Quick Kicks
-Not a poor effort from Newcastle United today at all, especially in the second half. They played with aggressiveness and were solid at the back for the most part.

– I’m surprised Dwight Gayle didn’t get the start and why it took so long to get him on in the match. He’s been the most consistent goal scorer on a poor scoring team and could’ve helped impact the match earlier on.
-I would expect to see Paul Dummett start in place of Manquillo next time out. He’s a natural left back and was a steady defender last season. Manquillo hasn’t been awful, but Dummett helps sure up the defense.
-A couple solid saves from Rob Elliot today, who returned after Karl Darlow’s howler on Wednesday. Elliot was able to punch the ball away at the last second to prevent a rebound goal for Iwobi, the exact thing Darlow failed to do vs. Everton.
-DeAndre Yedlin and Florian Lejeune were both very active defensively, cutting out attacks.
-Just to put it on the record, nobody could’ve stopped Ozil’s strike. It was on the first touch and perfectly executed. That’s what world class players do.
