Newcastle United once again turn their attention to former Spurs midfielder

Unfortunately, it may not be in January.
Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez are coming off a frustrating defeat this past weekend, in a 3-1 loss at Chelsea. Transfer rumours have linked the Magpies with several different players, and now their midfield could receive a boost in the approaching summer.
Reports this week have Hamburger SV declining to extend the contract of Lewis Holtby, and the former Tottenham man could be poised for a Premier League return. The 27-year-old moved from North London to the Bundesliga in 2015.
The German international showed tremendous potential during his time at Schalke at the start of this decade, and is still young enough to make an impact at Newcastle.
Holtby has struggled to earn consistent playing time this season with Hamburg, only making seven league appearances thus far.
United and Benitez were interested in the player over the summer, but a deal did not materialise. When examining the system that Newcastle’s manager has implemented, it can be easy to see why he could thrive at St. James’ Park.
With great attacking skills and excellent passing abilities, Holtby could certainly succeed in a number ten role behind the main striker. And on a free, it would be a smart piece of business.

That view is obviously very optimistic, and the concern is the consistency that the player can bring to a team.
Dips in form
One issue that has truly been a problem for Holtby is steady production, evidenced by several loan spells throughout his career.
There have been incredible flashes at all of his stops, but in some ways he has never quite been the same since leaving Schalke.
With the right squad and coaches around him in the North East, perhaps Holtby will be ready for the English top flight once more.

Newcastle United and Rafa Benitez want to see improvements in the coming weeks. It may have to wait until the summer, but Lewis Holtby can be a stellar addition.
