The likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Mikel Merino and Matt Ritchie have all played well at various points during the campaign. Despite recent fitness concerns, Christian Atsu has been a major positive as well.
But two areas can assist Newcastle in making the January transfer window a successful one – playmaking abilities and depth.
Interesting options have been present in Miguel Almiron and Andreas Samaris for next month, and each brings different strengths.
Almiron had an outstanding first season in Major League Soccer with Atlanta United, and can provide quite a bit as an attacking midfielder in the opposing half.
Benfica’s Samaris offers a balanced skillset that may fit in Benitez’s philosophy best, possessing a wonderful touch and can pass the ball accurately higher up the pitch.
Players like Ayoze Perez and Mohamed Diame have been used out of position, struggling to create a spark in the line-up. Considering injuries as well, it will be vital for United to have various possibilities in team selection and do what is required to improve the attack also.
With so much importance on the middle of Benitez’s formation, the midfield must be a priority in the coming weeks.
