Newcastle United and Chelsea have been doing battle since 1907.

There have been 160 previous meetings between Newcastle United and Chelsea. The record currently sits with Newcastle winning 52, Chelsea winning 69, and 39 draws.

The two clubs met first in 1907 with Newcastle United winning a 1-0 result in League Division One action. Neither side won more than three matches in a row until the mid-1950’s. That’s when the rivalry began to favor Chelsea.

More from Newcastle Toons

Beginning in 1954, Newcastle United would go winless in 17 straight attempts vs. Chelsea. That run included big wins like 6-2 in 1957 and 6-1 in 1961. A 2-0 victory for the Toon in 1963 finally ended that run of supremacy for the Blues.  Chelsea would have a shorter streak in the late 1960’s, going undefeated in nine straight fixtures. Newcastle United ended that with a 2-0 win in 1973 behind a brace from Malcolm MacDonald.

Chelsea won the first Premier League match-up in 1993. They would also go on another long undefeated run, 11 matches, from 1998 to 2003. The Blues defeated Newcastle on penalties to win the 2003 Premier League Asia Trophy. The 2010 League Cup 3rd round match between the two sides was a classic in the rivalry. Newcastle United led 3-1, but allowed Chelsea to equalize in the 87th minute. Fan favorite Shola Ameobi scored the winner for Newcastle in the 90th minute.

Recent history has been closely contested. Since 2012, each side has won four matches along with one draw. The last time they met Chelsea blew out Newcastle United 5-1 in the Magpies’ relegation bound season, with Andros Townsend scoring in the 90th minute to avoid the shutout.
