Ahead of their fixture tomorrow, we look back at the previous meetings between Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion.

While it may not be a heated rivalry, Newcastle United vs. West Brom is certainly a long lasting one. The first year Newcastle United faced off with West Brom was 1898 in League Division One action. There have been 127 matches since between the two sides and the series is remarkably close. The all-time record right now is 47 wins for Newcastle, 48 wins for West Brom, and 33 draws.

More from Newcastle Toons

The Magpies won three of the first five match-ups, but then things went sour. After winning a match 1-0 in 1904, Newcastle United wouldn’t defeat West Brom again until 1922, a run of 12 matches. The Baggies would beat Newcastle 10 times in the 1950’s, scoring a high mark in the series with a 7-3 victory in 1953. The next decade wasn’t much better. Newcastle United only won two matches out of 10 in the 1960’s.

In the early 1970’s, the Magpies would go on a small undefeated run of their own. West Brom went winless against Newcastle for seven straight matches.

Since 2000, Newcastle United has largely controlled the rivalry. In 25 matches, they’ve won 11 and only lost six. The clubs split their two most recent meetings, both 1-0 victories for the home side. Aleksandar Mitrovic scored the lone Newcastle goal in February of 2016.

The lopsided victories favor West Brom. Newcastle’s largest margin of victory in the series is four, while West Brom has defeated Newcastle by 5+ goals on three occasions. That includes a 6-0 victory in 1960.
