Rafa Benitez is stuck choosing between Newcastle United wins and discipline when it comes to Aleksandar Mitrovic.
Yesterday’s match against Bournemouth was one that lacked some bite in the attack for Newcastle United. They weren’t able to create many chances and when they did, they weren’t able to convert. This has been an issue for Joselu all season, and despite adding Dwight Gayle to the lineup yesterday, the club was blanked yet again. Toon Army chimed in, via chants at St. James’ Park and on Twitter, that they felt Aleksandar Mitrovic could be a big boost. Rafa Benitez responded by subbing on Ayoze Perez for Joselu, then Jacob Murphy for Christian Atsu, leaving Mitrovic an unused substitute.
The Serbian striker has scored twice this season, once as a starter in cup action vs. Nottingham Forest and another as a substitute vs. West Ham. The only other match he played in was against Crystal Palace. He was also banned for three matches due to violent conduct, an elbow to Manuel Lanzini. His temper and aggression are his calling card, for good and bad. He’s also been in good form with the Serbian national team.
With the club struggling to muster chances and score goals, most believe Mitro is a better option than Joselu. However, reports are that he doesn’t follow Rafa’s instructions in training or during matches. The Spanish manager finds himself having to choose between a more explosive attacker and allowing a lack of discipline.

For supporters, they will almost always choose results. If Mitrovic, a fan favorite, can provide them more goals and more wins, they don’t care if he doesn’t follow the manager’s instructions to a “t”. But, Rafa keeping him on the bench shows that he is the boss and you must fall in line or you won’t play.
If the attack continues to struggle, it will be interesting to see if Rafa concedes to playing Mitrovic. With rumors of him being a potential transfer target in January, there will be no reason to hold onto him if he’s not going to get a chance to help the club.
I’m all in favor of playing Mitrovic ahead of Joselu. He changes the game and forces the defense to focus in on him. Whether he is a model student or not, Mitro can help the club win matches and that’s what we’re all here for.
