Joe Harvey (1962-1975, 1980)

Football managers all bring different and unique qualities, but there are certainly common threads between them also. Tactics and player management are key, but few characteristics can be as crucial as stability.

That stability is what defined Joe Harvey as Newcastle United manager.

A former captain as a player and the club’s longest-serving manager, his 224 victories are more than any other in this list.

Second Division champions during the 1964-65 season, Harvey would lead the Magpies to European glory before the end of the decade.

Newcastle United lifted the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup with a 6-2 aggregate victory in the 1969 final over Hungarian side Ujpesti Dozsa.

The tournament was a predecessor to the UEFA Cup, which began two years later.

Harvey also captured minor silverware in the 1970s, including the Anglo-Italian Cup (1973) and the Texaco Cup (1974 & 1975). He had an incredible eye for talent, and found players who would fit his system perfectly.

Malcolm Macdonald, Terry McDermott and Mickey Burns were all a part of Harvey’s successes. He resigned amidst team struggles in 1975, but did return in a caretaker role in 1980.
