A difficult week for the manager may require more time away. And that should be the focus.

Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez travel to Swansea City on Sunday, aiming for their second consecutive Premier League victory. However, there is a concern that the Magpies’ coach may not be a part of the trip.

The Spanish tactician was reportedly not on the training ground Wednesday, after recovering from an operation performed this week. The procedure was related to an infection from a previous hernia surgery.

Benitez is expected to make a full recovery, but needs time to recuperate. With this thought in mind, his status for the Swansea match this weekend is in question.

Stress does not help

With all of the angst felt by Benitez during the past week, one must assume that his stress levels were sky-high.

The transfer deadline day brought frustration for both the manager and supporters, with matters pertaining to his own health likely adding to the negative feelings.

Benitez has demonstrated great patience throughout his career, and that quality is truly admirable. From Liverpool to Chelsea to Real Madrid, the 57-year-old has been able to handle difficult situations and individuals with both dignity and class.

But in moments such as these, he must take care of himself and his own body. A deadline-day meeting with club managing director Lee Charnley was believed to have featured high tempers, and Benitez left in a bitter mood.

Considering what he had on his mind in terms of the recent operation, one could understand that all of this at Newcastle was becoming too much.

As important as it is for Benitez to be with his side in South Wales on Sunday afternoon, it is more important for him to get the proper rest that he requires.

Newcastle United players know that a result at Swansea is the weekend’s priority, but that does not take priority over their boss’ health.
