The 1-0 loss to Huddersfield Town is not a match Newcastle United will be proud of.

Two matches into their return to the Premier League, Newcastle United is still looking for their first point. They’re also still searching for the back of the net, shutout again today in a 1-0 loss to Huddersfield Town.

More from Newcastle Toons

As they did in the second half of last week’s match, Newcastle sorely missed Jonjo Shelvey. He served the first of a three match ban for his stomp in the Spurs match. Mikel Merino started in his place alongside Isaac Hayden. Jacob Murphy and Joselu made their Newcastle United debuts in the second half. Henri Saivet was a surprise in the 18, but did not appear. Rafa Benitez will be looking for answers and fast, with this Premier League season starting off the opposite of what the club had hoped.

Top Toons

Chancel Mbemba: A season after letting down Rafa, Mbemba has impressed in early action this campaign. He filled in at left back for the injured Paul Dummett and made a series of important clearances, with his feet or head. Him showcasing versatility on the back line will be important to the club.

Matt Ritchie: He narrowly missed a goal in the first half and continues to provide 100% energy for his entire shift. He was a bit clumsy at times in his challenges, but he is a tireless worker for NUFC.

Christian Atsu: The speedy winger was again a key part of the attack. This time playing on the right side, he got involved in the offense early and often for the Magpies.

Mediocre Magpies

Dwight Gayle: Poor performance by Newcastle’s top scorer from last year. Seemed to disappear for long stretches and didn’t have many positive plays.

Mikel Merino: He got his first start in place of Shelvey and seemed overwhelmed. He tried to do too much on some of his passes and lost composure on the ball as well.

Joselu: Subbed on for the disappointing Gayle and proceeded to send a few lazy, poor efforts towards the goal. He was assertive, which was good, but clearly could’ve done better with his chances.

Pivotal Moment

Aaron Mooy’s goal early in the second half. It was the lone goal and gave Rob Elliot very little chance of keeping it out.

What’s Next?

Newcastle United will host a pair of matches in the coming week. On Wednesday, they host Nottingham Forest in a cup match. They’ve won three of their first four matches in EFL play this season. Then, Chicharito and West Ham come to St. James’ Park on Saturday in EPL action. West Ham is also sitting at two losses, dropping a 3-2 result to Southampton this weekend.
