Not a good first performance back in the first division.

The start of the Premier League campaign has brought great excitement to the North East, with over 50,000 fans in attendance for Newcastle’s return to the top flight versus Tottenham. After a physical and bruising first half, the Magpies ultimately fell due to a crucial and mindless decision from their captain.

Jonjo Shelvey received a red card soon after the half-time break for a step on Dele Alli’s ankle, and Spurs made the most of it in a 2-0 victory.

Newcastle now prepare for Huddersfield Town next weekend.

The first 45 minutes brought great frustration for manager Rafa Benitez, as he saw two of his defenders leave the pitch injured. Paul Dummett and Florian Lejeune were substituted early on, and the Toon Army will certainly be hoping that they will not miss significant time.

The clubs were level at the half, but saw the afternoon take an ugly turn with a surprising send-off. Shelvey’s foolish choice in the moment left Newcastle at a considerable disadvantage, and they were unable to recover.

Alli opened the scoring soon after, before Ben Davies added a second in the 70th minute.

Fitness and frustrations

A key priority will be the fitness of Lejeune and Dummett, as suddenly Benitez has major concerns along the back-line. If either will miss many matches, a new plan must be formed in the defence.

Harry Kane’s tackle on Lejeune was harsh, and fans expecting more than a yellow card were left quite irritated.

For Shelvey, it is something that many on Tyneside were concerned about when he received the captain’s armband. His temper has brought trouble before, and it brought the same on Sunday.

In the attack, Dwight Gayle was isolated and received little help in the opposing half. Christian Atsu was able to create space out wide and made dangerous runs at various points, but more will be needed on the front-line.

Newcastle United’s Premier League return did not go as planned against Tottenham. Hopefully a better result will be waiting for them at Huddersfield.
