Tottenham Hotspur – April 1999

Alan Shearer’s exploits in the Premier League were of the highest quality, but his goals in other competitions were crucial during his years at Newcastle United as well. And one of his best came in a dramatic FA Cup semi-final.

After a 0-0 stalemate led to extra-time against Tottenham, Shearer scored both goals in a 2-0 victory to send the Magpies to Wembley Stadium for the final.

The first was a penalty, but it was the second that sent supporters into the clouds.

Shearer takes a pass just outside the penalty area, sending a scorching blast into the top right corner that no goalkeeper in the world could have stopped.

With power and pace thanks to the outside of his right boot, the ball takes a perfect hit off both the crossbar and the right post on the way in.

Newcastle would go on to lose the FA Cup final to Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson by the same scoreline, but few members of the Toon Army forget where they were when Shearer struck that day in 1999.

The best players find their best performances in the matches that matter most, just as Alan Shearer did against Tottenham to advance to a cup final.
