Southampton – October 2003

The beginning of the 2003-04 season was frustrating for Newcastle United. Elimination from the UEFA Champions League in the qualifying rounds and only three points to show from their first six Premier League fixtures created an anxious energy around the team.

But Alan Shearer helped to turn things around in a massive way, and it all started with a tremendous strike against Southampton.

It was against the club where Shearer’s career matured, before his move to Blackburn Rovers in 1992.

His goal that day was the winner in a 1-0 victory, and the result eventually led to three more consecutive league wins.

Midfielder Jermaine Jenas sends a fantastic through-ball past the Saints’ defence to put Shearer on goal, but the pass is a step ahead of the striker.

With only critical seconds available to make the most of the opportunity, Shearer is able to get a touch and blast it into the side-netting.

Newcastle United would go on to finish fifth in the Premier League that season, and enjoy a wonderful run to the semi-final stage of the UEFA Cup. But none of it would have been possible without Alan Shearer providing a spark at a critical point in the campaign.
