No more false dawns for Newcastle United: The “Rafalution” continues
By Graeme Bell
Why something very special is taking shape in the North East.
It was a sunny August day in 2005, and over 20,000 fans gathered inside St James’ Park. Many thought this was the day that everything would change. Michael Owen was unveiled as Newcastle United’s record signing. It brought a hope, a buzz and an excitement that the future looked bright for the club.
It was during a time where Newcastle were paying over the odds for big egos, that delivered very little for the club. Players with little heart and desire kept coming through the doors of St James’ Park. Owen is a prime example of a player that just didn’t care about this great club, and unfortunately there have been many others that have followed him.
There is a different Newcastle United now, one with a squad full of players that want to succeed on Tyneside.

No big egos and no big names, but players with hunger, drive, determination and with a point to prove. Rafael Benitez is transforming Newcastle United, ridding the club of the players that have plagued them for too long.
The club have a sense of unity, something that had been missing for far too long. There are more leaders in the dressing room, players who are not afraid to stand up and make their voices heard when things aren’t right. That was certainly missing during the 2015-16 campaign, with only Jamaal Lascelles making his voice heard.
Benitez has not only brought a sense of togetherness in the dressing room, but he has united the fanbase. Under the likes of Alan Pardew and Steve McClaren, supporters became disillusioned with the club. You could feel the frustration and animosity amongst the St James’ Park crowd. However, the tide has turned and Benitez has put the bounce back in Newcastle fans. St James’ Park was truly rocking at times last season.
Fans can put their faith in this set of players, the same could not be said for the likes of Moussa Sissoko who only put in a good performance when he felt like it. Buying big names does not necessarily bring success, but teamwork, dedication, drive and hunger can also prevail.
Although Newcastle are in good shape for next season, there is still work to be done in terms of transfers, both in and out of the club. Benitez is assembling a squad that is more than capable of staying in the Premier League. The Newcastle manager is meticulous, and knows exactly what the team needs.
