Newcastle United’s spectacular second half too much for Bradford City
By Roy Emanuel
Newcastle remain unbeaten in the pre-season with a dominant showing.
A draw this past Saturday at Preston North End may have hurt Newcastle United’s confidence, as a strong start to the game ended flat. It was just the opposite Wednesday evening against Bradford City, as the Magpies overwhelmed the hosts in the second half for a 4-0 victory.
The club now have a record of 2-1-0 through their pre-season fixtures.

The first half featured strong performances from the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and DeAndre Yedlin, each producing well from their respective roles. Shelvey operated in an unfamiliar holding spot, but displayed accurate passing and sharp movement. Yedlin’s pace was difficult for the Bantams to account for, and the American international was able to create space and stretch Bradford’s defence.
Chances and opportunities came, and Newcastle went into the break at 0-0. But that is where things changed dramatically at Valley Parade.
Dwight Gayle opened the scoring in the 50th minute, with Jacob Murphy netting his first United goal only moments later with incredible moves on the ball.
Manager Rafa Benitez’s side kept the pressure on throughout the final 45 minutes, with Aleksandar Mitrovic adding a third goal before Murphy found his second of the match. It was Newcastle at their attacking best so far during this pre-season, and fans will expect to see that trend continue Saturday afternoon at Mainz 05.
Murphy makes his impact
Jacob Murphy’s signing this summer has been exciting for a number of reasons, and the Toon Army has been anxious to see him live up to the hype on the pitch. He was able to do just that with his impressive brace Wednesday.
The English winger was dangerous out wide, and a constant threat in the opposing half. As he becomes more comfortable with his new coaches and team-mates, his performances can improve even further in the future.

Few events build confidence within pre-season matches like scoring goals in bunches. For Newcastle United and Rafa Benitez, they were able to enjoy such a moment against Bradford City.
