Newcastle United take home the Sky Bet Championship title
Newcastle United won their final three matches, pushing past Brighton for the league trophy.
All Brighton had to do over their last three matches, was win one match. The table read Brighton 92, Newcastle United 85, before the final trio of fixtures for each club. Brighton did not get a victory in their last three, Newcastle won all of theirs. Now, on May 7th, as Newcastle defeated Barnsley and Brighton drew with Aston Villa, the trophy goes to the Magpies, winning the league by one point, 94 to 93.

Nearly this whole season, Brighton and Newcastle were battling atop the table. In their head to head matches, Newcastle won both. Brighton, however, won the battle to automatically promote first. Brighton is managed by former Newcastle boss Chris Hughton.
NUFC’s goal differential was 45, 11 goals better than the Seagulls. They will get to do battle again next season, but this time, on the Premier League stage. While Newcastle is a fixture in the EPL, this will be the first season Brighton sees the Premier League.
While his future isn’t certain, Rafa Benitez has absolutely become a legend in Magpies history. He stuck with the club during their relegation, and brought them back to the top level. Now that he’s won the Championship, his title wins include: La Liga, the UCL, Coppa Italia, the FA Cup, and Europa League. The Spanish manager is exactly the man Newcastle needs in charge, and hopefully his conversation with Mike Ashley goes that direction.
But for today, there is no need to worry about the future. Today, Toon Army celebrates Newcastle United winning the Sky Bet Championship.
