Andros Townsend has been Newcastle United’s top target for weeks now. Not acquiring him, would be a big disappointment.
Whether he has often came out and said it, Rafa Benitez has had Andros Townsend at the top of his wishlist for most of this transfer window. If Newcastle United isn’t able to bring Townsend back to the club over the next day, it will be a letdown. Not because Andros Townsend is an absolute savior. The club will likely achieve promotion with, or without, the English international, so that’s not the big issue.
It will be a letdown because it is a target that Rafa truly wanted, and couldn’t make it happen. It will be a player who wants to return to Newcastle, would help the team, and doesn’t come back due to money. The latest rumors are that Crystal Palace want $2M to loan him the rest of the season, with a 13 million dollar option to make it permanent this summer, if the club gains promotion. It’s not a no brainer for Newcastle money wise, but it’s an investment they may need to make. They could possibly use the rumored swap for Mbemba to help offset some of the loan fee, but that’s not a sure thing.

The situation is a strange one by soccer, and sports standards in general. Andros Townsend departed Newcastle United for Crystal Palace last summer, after Newcastle was relegated to the Championship. It wasn’t due to a lack of love for Newcastle as a club, but more a lack of interest in playing outside the Premier League. He has never fully found his footing with Palace.
From a purely soccer standpoint, it makes great sense for him to return to Tyneside. He played arguably the best in his career last season for the Magpies. NUFC could use a talented winger, and another offensive creator. He’s only 25 years old, and obviously has experience in the Premier League.
Hopefully, Newcastle and Crystal Palace can come to terms, and send Andros Townsend back to Tyneside. If not, the excitement over his possible return will fade into regret the club couldn’t make it happen.
