If Newcastle United can’t secure a deal to add any players during this transfer window, everything will still be fine.

Let me start off by saying, I anticipate Newcastle United coming to terms with at least one player this month to join the side. But, if that doesn’t happen Toon Army, don’t overreact. The club currently finds itself atop the EFL table. That is no small feat, but every supporters focus is on the future: a potential return to the English Premier League. Do we have enough firepower? What if a key player gets hurt? Who can keep us from being relegated again?

Simply, these aren’t issues that absolutely must be solved by February 1st. Would it be great if they could bring in a player like Tom Cairney this month to allow him to gel with his teammates for the rest of the season? Of course. But, players at this level are professional. They can adapt quickly if they come in with the right mindset. Or, in the case of a potential return to Newcastle for Andros Townsend, he was a member of the club only six months ago. Whether they bring him back now, or after they secure promotion, doesn’t drastically impact the future.

More from Newcastle Toons

Rafa Benitez is a great manager. He has done well navigating Jonjo Shelvey’s ban, injuries up top, and losing three players to the Africa Cup of Nations. He will do a great job managing whatever side he is given. A great example was his mixing in of the three youngsters in the win over Birmingham City yesterday. The top transfer rumors have mostly been forwards, attacking midfielders, or wingers. Dwight Gayle currently leads the EFL in goals, but he is out with an injury. They could use an additional player to give him scoring support. Yoan Gouffran was great up top against Birmingham City, and he provides a viable option. They also have Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez that can contribute when given the chance. Another creative midfielder would be vital as well. Shelvey’s absence showed a huge gap in playmaking between him and the players who filled in for him. That is another place Ayoze has shown promise. It’s also something that can wait until summer.

I would much rather the club wait, and get the right player for the right place, than feel pressured to bring in a body this window, and overpay or bring in a player that doesn’t fit. The club is strong, and has some moves they can make to further enhance the club this summer, including a potential permanent move for loanee Christian Atsu. If they can’t make a move this window, don’t fret. You have the best club in the Championship and another window before a potential EPL return.
