Newcastle United hammered Totteham Hotspur 5-1 in the Barclays Premier League.

Much criticised Dutch playmaker Georginio Wijnaldum hit two, while Serbian Aleksandar Mitrovic scored one before being sent off.

Rolando Aarons and Daryl Janmaat grabbed the last two in quick succession as the Magpies romped home to a comfortable win.

Erik Lamela made things 2-1 after hitting a powerful shot that third choice goalkeeper Karl Darlow couldn’t keep out at his near post, but it was never nervous times for United.

It was an impressive way to finish a very unimpressive season, and the match gave the St. James’ Park crowd a reason to roar one last time before heading into the Championship.

Speaking after the fixture, manager Rafa Benitez said there was no reason why Newcastle shouldn’t bounce straight back up.

“I want to be sure we are strong enough to come back to the Premier League next year. I think we have a good team,” the Chronicle reported that he said.
