Newcastle relegated but did Everton throw the game?

facebooktwitterreddit

That’s right. I’m calling shenanigans because of news involving Everton wanting to sign Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez. Benitez’s deal was if Newcastle United get relegated, either the club or himself can activiate the break clause in the contract and he is free to go.

It is quite likely that Benitez will choose to leave, however, Newcastle United’s fans have given him great reason to stay. And the ability for him to keep players on the team because of his presence instead of them leaving to greener pastures.

But let’s take a look at the fact that Sunderland had total control over the situation. They needed to beat Everton (who want Benitez) and then Newcastle would be effectively relegated. With nothing to play for, Everton didn’t care about the result. Or perhaps they did, enough to let Newcastle United go down, and make a pitch to Rafa Benitez to join a Premier League club again.

I know, it’s a strong accusation to make. But when you’re frustrated, all the puzzle pieces fall into place.

More from Newcastle Toons

It’s a shame that after all the hard work put in by Rafa Benitez, seeing Newcastle go down is a hard pill to swallow. Without Benitez, we cannot be sure as to whether or not the club will be immediately promoted as they were last time they got relegated back in 2009. It’s almost a sure thing that the club will lose players as well.

So yes, Everton will be on my “naughty list” for quite some time. And the future of Newcastle United does not look promising unless Benitez is still in the picture, and let’s face it, he can have whatever job he wants to have.

This article will be one of many detailing the club’s future, speculation, and potential moves. And while I am completely serious with my accusations of match-throwing, let’s take a very serious note.

Next: Absolutely gutted! Newcastle players react to relegation

Us as fans of Newcastle United have an obligation to stick together in times like these. A club that I have loved since childhood getting relegated for the second time is not something that I take lightly. This site has been an amazing platform, and I seriously look forward to continuing great coverage of the football club we love.

Howay the lads!
