Newcastle United drew 1-1 with Manchester City to earn the Magpies a vital point.

Sergio Aguero opened the scoring for the away side with an offside header following a free kick, while Vurnon Anita equalised for the Tynesiders before half time.

A lot had been said in the build up to the fixture about the required attitude of the Newcastle players, and the effort and determination they gave against the Citizens was first class.

Under Steve McClaren, an early goal conceded often spelt doom – but not this time. New manager Rafa Benitez has got the side working for each other, and it’s paying off.

Georginio Wijnaldum could have won it late on for the home side if it wasn’t for a superb Joe Hart save – but the draw puts them in a good position  going into the Liverpool fixture at the weekend.

Anita also excellent in the unfamiliar right back position, which will encourage Benitez if Daryl Janmaat is unavailable again.
