Newcastle United handed Moussa Sissoko the armband for the Swansea City clash.

It was a move that raised eyebrows around St. James’ Park and beyond, but it was a decision that ultimately worked for manager Rafa Benitez.

The Frenchman scored his first goal of the season, and gave a much better performance, after being granted the honour.

Stand-in skipper Jonjo Shelvey was dropped to the bench for the match against his old club, but he too made a positive contribution once he entered the fray.

Jamaal Lascelles opened the scoring against the Swans, before Sissoko grabbed his from another corner and Andros Townsend rounded off the route following a clever pass from substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic.

After the game, the BBC reported that Benitez said: “I have to say congratulations to the players. They showed passion and commitment. Thank you to the fans.”
