Angry Newcastle United fans have reacted to their spineless defeat to Southampton on Saturday.

The Saints put three goals past a helpless and heartless Magpies defence during a woeful first half, before Andros Townsend pulled one back.

Shane Long opened the scoring for the home side, before Graziano Pelle and Victor Wanyama added the second and third.

Townsend then fired home a cracker from long range to bring one back for the Tyneside club, but they hardly threatened former player Fraser Forster in goal.

The defeat leaves them in second bottom with only six games to go, although the fact that Crystal Palace beat Norwich City is one ray of hope.

Speaking after the game, the BBC reported that manager Rafa Benitez said: “To be fair, the last three games have been the same. I’ve been saying the same thing.

“Second half we did much better but I’m really disappointed with the first half. Everyone needs to know that we have a lot of people behind us and so we need to give everything.”
