Newcastle United have made some pointless transfers over the years, but what are the five worst made in the Mike Ashley era?

After the news that striker Seydou Doumbia has been held off the pitch on purpose so that the Magpies don’t have to fork out £17m for the player, Newcastle Toons looks through five of the most pointless transfers during Ashley’s time at the club.

There have been a fair few brainless buys, and the early magic of Graham Carr and his network of talent spotters seems to have come to an end.

The January transfer window has always thrown up a few bad bits of buisness – think Kim Kallstrom at Arsenal – as clubs panic and try to bring in anyone who can boost their squad.

For all of Mike Ashley’s frugality in this department, the Tyneside club are as guilty of this as anyone – as list list will prove.

Newcastle have changed their transfer strategy this season, but it’s unclear whether or not they can continue with their big spending ways after Ashley claimed the club had spent all its money.
