Newcastle transfers: Steve McClaren’s buys ranked and rated
Former head coach Steve McClaren had the biggest transfer kitty handed to any Toon boss during the Mike Ashley era.
By bringing in players like Chancel Mbemba, Florian Thauvin and Georginio Wijnaldum, he was supposed to usher in a new age at St. James’ Park.
However, his reign at the club flopped – leading to owner Mike Ashley dismissing McClaren and bringing in Rafa Benitez for the final 10 games.
How much of that is down to the players is up for discussion, but they certainly look a lot more tactically sure of themselves under Benitez.
