Newcastle United beat West Ham United in front of a buzzing home crowd.

Head coach Steve McClaren gave new signing Jonjo Shelvey a debut, and he performed well throughout the 90 minutes.

The Magpies went 2-0 up within 15 minutes thanks to goals from Ayoze Perez and Georginio Wijnaldum, and they could have had more if it wasn’t for some poor finishing.

Shelvey played a part in both goals, but it was his pass for the second that will have Newcastle fans excited. He picked up Daryl Janmaat with a rasping 60 yard pass that Andrea Pirlo would have been proud of.

The Hammers got one goal back through Croatia striker Nikica Jelavic after a dreadful back pass from Chancel Mbemba, but neither side could add to the deadlock after that.
