Newcastle United suffered a fourth straight defeat on Saturday afternoon.

After drawing newly promoted Watford in the third round of the FA Cup, many Magpies fans would have been quietly optimistic of progressing through to the next round.

However, the defeat added another layer of miscontent to the Toon Army’s relationship with the club – and it marked the fourth year in a row that Newcastle had gone out of the competition at that stage.

After naming a strong team in a rejigged 3-5-2 formation, head coach Steve McClaren would have hoped for a stronger reaction from his players.

Instead, they have now gone four games without scoring – and incredibly, they have lost the last four games by the same 1-0 margin.
