Newcastle United suffered a fourth straight defeat on Saturday as they lost to Watford.

The FA Cup third round has not been kind to the Magpies, and they have now lost in the same stage of the competition for four years running.

Compounding the Tyneside club’s list of problems is their lack of goals – and they have now failed to hit the back of the net for four games, losing them all by the same 1-0 margin.

Strangely, Newcastle’s defence seems to have tightened up over recent weeks, while it is the attack that is letting them down. During the course of the Christmas fixtures, players such as Siem de Jong, Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic have failed to put away clear cut chances.

Despite playing a 3-5-2 formation, head coach Steve McClaren failed to select De Jong or Florain Thauvin, leading to calls of frustration from the Toon Army.
