Newcastle United put in a limp display as they lost 1-0 away to West Bromwich Albion.

Coming only two days after their home loss to Everton by the same margin, the Magpies again lacked any cutting edge and were beaten by the Baggies in their home turf.

Darren Fletcher scored the only goal of the game for Tony Pulis’ men, who enjoyed a night of superiority over Newcastle. They had 22 shots on goal compared to seven for the away side, with five of those being on target. By contrast, the Magpies could only manage two.

Head coach Steve McClaren decided to play Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic up front again, while French signing Florian Thauvin was only given three minutes to impress despite the Baggies taking the lead with 15 to go.

After the game, the BBC reported that Pulis said: “They were dangerous on the counter and we had to defend the set-plays well, but I don’t think there’s any argument that we should have won the game. The disappointing thing again is that we should have scored more goals.”
