Newcastle United suffered a limp loss to West Bromwich Albion on Monday night.

The Magpies went down 1-0 thanks to a Darren Fletcher goal, just two days after Tom Cleverly headed a last second winner for Everton at St. James’ Park. The loss is the Tyneside club’s second in a row, and leaves them third from bottom on 17 points.

Head coach Steve McClaren came in for criticism on social media from fed up Geordies after he claimed the side were ‘consistent’ in their performance. The side have only won four times all season, and have now let in 34 goals in just 19 league matches.

Speaking after the game, the Chronicle reported that the former England manager said: “We have to continue with the attitude and character we are showing at the present moment.

“You are just hoping that fortune will turn around. If we keep working as hard as we have done over recent games that will turn around.”

While he also had praise for Newcastle’s travelling support: “Whatever we do, we will continue to recognise the fans after a game. Win, lose or draw, I think it’s important. I thought the support was magnificent all the way through.”
