Five players who could add steel to Newcastle’s defence
Newcastle United need to invest in the January transfer window, so we have named five defenders who could give the team some steel at the back.
With captain Fabricio Coloccini in terrible form and fighting for his future, Jamaal Lascelles, Steven Taylor and Mike Williamson out injured, cover is needed in defence.
Not only are extra bodies needed in the squad, but better quality is a necessity. Williamson and Taylor arguably won’t be at the club for much longer, while Lascelles is still learning the ropes.

A full defensive restructure is required – but that won’t happen in January. At best, Steve McClaren and the team behind the scenes will bring in one or two defenders, and leave the rest until the summer.
