Newcastle United beat West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon to move above the relegation zone.

The Magpies missed a host of chances, and should have won the game by a more comfortable margin – but once again their finishing let them down at key times.

Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has come under fire for not putting away opportunities when they presented themselves, but he calmly finished past Ben Foster when Jonjo Shelvey played him through on goal.

The Tyneside club are now one point above Norwich City, who fell into the drop zone thanks to their 2-0 loss to Aston Villa.

Speaking after the game, the BBC reported that head coach Steve McClaren said:

“The first five minutes today, you could see we were really up for this game. For 95 minutes we were relentless in attack, and we should have scored more.

“As a manager you do worry as the game goes on, but you just have to sit down and pray it’s just your day.”
