Why a 'refreshed' Yoane Wissa will play a key role for Newcastle United

After scoring his first goal of the campaign for the Magpies on Saturday evening, Yoane Wissa has signalled the start of what looks to be a big season ahead and looks completely refreshed compared to what we saw last season.

Last season wasn't the real Wissa

When Wissa joined last summer, it was a matter of Newcastle needing Premier League experience to replace the departing Alexander Isak, who pretty much hijacked the whole summer.

But the problem was that Wissa missed half the season after picking up an injury on international duty with DR Congo. He missed the first half of the season, and when he was back playing for Newcastle, he wasn't fit and didn't get enough time on the training pitch.

We never got to see the full version of him or what he was capable of because of that injury setback, and it didn't help that the Magpies were in a rough patch.

A positive World Cup campaign provided renewed energy

Wissa went to the World Cup with Congo, and he looked like the complete version of himself, having scored against Portugal to earn a draw and adding two more goals in their game against Uzbekistan.

It was safe to say that Wissa was in peak form and looked revitalised and filled with renewed energy, which unfortunately wasn't there in his first season with the Toon Army.

He even nearly scored against England, and despite the early exit, the World Cup brought confidence back to the 29-year-old, giving him ambition and a desire to prove himself as he entered the new League season.

New manager brings new chances.

A fresh face brings new opportunities for established players such as Wissa, who has carried over his World Cup form into the new season under new boss Matthias Jaissle.

Wissa has looked sharp throughout pre-season and has continued that form. In the opener against Liverpool, he had an eye for the ball, wanted to continue the passing movement, and, in doing so, assisted a goal for Joe Willock.

Wissa wanting to prove himself is an advantage for Newcastle.

Wissa's desire to right the wrongs of last season and prove himself is a big advantage for Newcastle, who will benefit from having an in-form centre forward. Fans have gotten a taste in these two opening games of the season of what the Congo international has to offer.

Wissa is sharp; he is hungry, motivated to prove himself to the manager, and confident. He has labelled himself a soldier and will keep going to deliver for his team and for all the Newcastle fans.

It is like a new signing for Newcastle and one that will benefit their attack, especially with the likelihood of the incoming Matias Fernandez. Wissa is a creative link between players and a threat in the penalty area.

His recognition that he wasn't at full strength last season and his desire to be better than that, as shown on the pitch and in his reflections on his own performances, mean Wissa will continue to reach high levels and give his all for Newcastle.
