Newcastle United is off to a decent start in their new Premier League campaign, with the club sitting in the 5th spot after four fixtures. Clearly, as Newcastle legend Alan Shearer had reflected, the Magpies club has been a bit unfortunate so far, and they need to improve further. As per recent reports, another Premier League legend has discussed a similar notion for the club's performance.

Paul Merson, an Arsenal legend and currently Sky Sports host, via Sportskeeda, analyzed Newcastle's performances so far, commenting on their chances of a top-4 finish this season. The former football icon mentioned that Newcastle was a bit fortunate in their win against Tottenham, with the latter side being more deserving.

In Merson's words,

"“I actually thought Newcastle were a bit fortunate in their win over Tottenham before the international break. I’ve still got to give credit to Newcastle as well, though; let’s not take that away from them.""

However, despite showing concern regarding the club's recent performances, the Sky Sports host predicted a 2-1 away win for Newcastle against Wolves. In fact, Merson had clear remarks on the hosts, saying they are in trouble and could face a relegation battle this season. For context, Wolves are coming into the fixture with two big losses and a draw against Nottingham, on which Merson said that the game against Newcastle would be very important for them.

Moreover, Paul Merson opined on the club's chances to secure a top-4 Premier League finish, which comes with the incentive of a Champions League berth. Speaking on the matter, Merson mentioned that according to him, Newcastle has more points given their performances so far, and thus, while it may not last forever, he believes the club might miss on a top-4 finish.

According to Merson, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal are certain to comprise the top four, with Newcastle ultimately in a race with four clubs for that final spot. With clubs like Aston Villa, Tottenham, Manchester United, and Chelsea in the race alongside Newcastle, Merson believes the club will fall a bit short.

Merson remarked,

""There are five teams fighting for that fourth spot: Aston Villa, Tottenham, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Newcastle. Newcastle are definitely in that race, but I feel they will fall a bit short in the end.""

However, Newcastle fans would hope that things go in favor of the Magpies club and they continue their unbeaten streak for long.
