Over the last few months, most of the Newcastle transfer news has centred around one key man - Kalvin Phillips. Given Eddie Howe's need to sign a midfielder due to the injury crisis AND Sandro Tonali's suspension, it is no surprise that the out-of-favour Manchester City midfielder is on the radar at St James Park.

Kalvin Phillips is an exceptional player and one who would walk into most Premier League teams. He just doesn't walk into his own team, given the world-class quality Pep Guardiola possesses in his midfield. With EURO 2024 right around the corner, Phillips needs to make an important decision involving his future and it seems that decision is agreed upon by all parties.

Newcastle transfer news: Kalvin Phillips will leave "by the end of next week"

That's right, according to a report from GiveMeSport, Kalvin Phillips is more than likely to leave Manchester City "by the end of next week". While this won't come as a surprise to many, it shows that City are keen to complete the sale or loan move efficiently, which could benefit Newcastle if we are the lucky suitors.

As I mentioned, we need a new midfield signing sooner rather than later. With Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff injured and Sandro Tonali suspended for a long while, we are depleted of options in the midfield and fatigue is clearly starting to show as we cannot get a good result recently.

Thankfully, we are out of the December period which means the fixture schedule will be kinder to Eddie Howe but this doesn't negate from our need to sign a top quality midfielder. Juventus are also interested in signing Kalvin Phillips, but I hope he sees that the logical decision for him to be noticed and favoured by Gareth Southgate and the England national team is to remain in the Premier League.
