If recent news is anything to go by, then it only seems like a matter of time before Newcastle sign Kalvin Phillips. Of course, we are always weary of believing everything we read since January is the worst month for tabloid lies but the Newcastle transfer news involving Kalvin Phillips has been pretty consistent.

That was until earlier today, when it was revealed that Spurs had joined the race to sign Kalvin Phillips after room had been made in their squad given the Eric Dier sale. It's never nice to have competition, but with Kalvin Phillips looking for a place in the England squad for EURO 2024, Spurs are the worst team to come calling from Newcastle's perspective.

Newcastle transfer news: Why Kalvin Phillips will choose Newcastle over Spurs

Well, according to TEAMtalk, Newcastle have been given one less thing to worry about as Kalvin Phillips might actually prefer to sign for Newcastle. While it has yet to be revealed his final decision, the report states that Phillips would prefer to stay in the North of England if given the choice, so a move to Newcastle may be favourable over a move to London.

This is one side to football transfers which people tend to overlook. As much as the pull of football clubs is important in some cases, in many other cases the players will be convinced by any decision which benefits their personal lives. Kalvin Phillips has a life which he has build up North with both Leeds and Manchester, so a move down South may not be of favour to him.

From a common sense perspective, this makes complete sense. Although it doesn't affect footballers, Phillips might save himself a few quid by staying up North than going down South.
