As we approach the opening of the January transfer window, expect the Newcastle transfer news to come in thick and fast. Particularly given the injury crisis and the suspension for Sandro Tonali, Eddie Howe and company will need to invest in the squad more than they have before.

Key areas of concern include a central midfielder, to replace the suspended Sandro Tonali and the long-term injured Elliot Anderson. Furthermore, a new defender wouldn't go a miss, given the injuries to key players such as Sven Botman and Dan Burn.

That said, signing a new striker doesn't seem like a key priority at face value. Although, if the opportunity does arise to sign a striker at a cheap cost, then what's to stop us from pursuing a new striker? After all, Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson don't have the best injury record.

Newcastle transfer news: Eddie Howe eyes troubled Chelsea star

According to a sensational claim by Shields Gazette, Newcastle could be eyeing a shock move for Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian international is currently on loan at Roma, but it remains to be seen whether Jose Mourinho is willing to make the move permanent. Although, Lukaku has started his new life in Serie A well

Lukaku is a troubled striker, I think that's fair to say. While nobody can doubt his quality, you can certainly question his mentality. He is one of those players that has played for a handful of clubs, yet no fanbase seem to recall happy memories with him.

Lukaku does have Premier League experience and he knows how to score goals in the English top flight. However, the fact that Chelsea are willing to take a big loss on their original value goes to show why we should be looking elsewhere. In my opinion, Serhou Guirassy is a much better option.
