Newcastle United's start to the new Premier League campaign hasn't been bad from the results perspective; however, the club has looked far from being convincing so far. While there have been problems in several departments in the club's lineup, one of the most prominent ones has been overdependence on Harvey Barnes in the frontline.
Fabrizio Romano reports Newcastle are still in the race for 27-year-old exciting forward
Since the beginning of the season, star forward Alexander Isak has gone much silent, and his single goal against Tottenham had come on an open goal opportunity. Moreover, with their backup forward Callum Wilson injured and having no significant return date, Newcastle boss Howe is left with little to no options for the role.
Addressing the same, Newcastle United has been reported to still actively monitor the 27-year-old forward; they were eyeing in the end stages of the transfer window. As per reports from Fabrizio Romano, the Magpies club are still on the lookout for Calvert Lewin, the Everton star, who had been one of the club's targets this summer.
Calvert Lewin, who has his contract end at Everton the next summer, similar to Callum Wilson, is eyed by the Newcastle club as a backup striker. Given the fact that his contract renewal talks with Everton haven't advanced yet, chances may arise that he makes a PL switch as a free agent next summer.
However, Fabrizio Romano has said clearly that so far, things haven't started in the forward's move deal, with Newcastle being one of the many clubs analyzing his situation.
Fabrizio Romano mentioned Newcastle's monitoring,
"‘It’s something they are likely to decide in the next months; no substantial changes now. There’s not only Newcastle among clubs interested—many other clubs are also attentive to his situation at Everton.”"Fabrizio Romano
From Newcastle's perspective, the chance of getting such a talent at a cut-fee price, given he might become a free agent next summer, could be a win-win deal for them. Not only as a backup choice, Calvert Lewin could start in place of Isak in the forward's difficult time, something that he is going through.
Although, as Fabrizio Romano mentioned, there haven't been concrete talks regarding a move for any side, even though Newcastle looks very interested in the forward. While it remains to be seen whether the Tyneside club can finalize Lewin's deal, chances are high that they will be investing in a forward next summer.
