A silent midfield
Although the return of star midfielder Sandro Tonali and the rise of Joe Willock in the Newcastle lineup had everyone predicting severe competition for the three spots, but on the last matchday, all of them looked ineffective. While Joe Willock had to be subbed off after not much of a convincing performance from the youngster, in the second half, the manager's affection with Joelinton and Guimaraes seems to have cost them.
Clearly, there isn't a doubt that Joelinton is one of the best players for the role; however, after the season opener against Southampton, the Brazilian star hadn't been very convincing. In such a scenario, not only did sticking with him cost Howe's lineup, but reduced the game minutes for Tonali, who has looked better in the role.
Lastly, captain Guimaraes had a nightmare of the fixture once again, as instead of delivering in favor of his club, he influenced Fulham's 3rd goal. In the end minutes, he made an awful pass, unto which Nelson made it 3-1 for Fulham. Newcastle's midfield as a whole needs significant improvisations before they could be ready for a brilliant campaign.
