Newcastle United might not renew £20 million veteran ahead of his contract expiry

Newcastle United's 2024/25 season has been a composite of two extremes. While the Magpies club has been brilliant on a few matchdays, they have been rather sloppy on others. As a result, while they do seem in a decent position, having 2 points from seven PL matchdays, they have gone winless on the last three outings.

While Eddie Howe's unit has seemed a bit off in all aspects, they have been suffering the most on their forward front. So far this season, in seven PL games, having scored just eight times, the club has had one of the worst numbers in the top 10 standings. With their star forwards Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson injured and William Osula being a raw talent, Newcastle has been suffering in the number 9 role.

However, not to forget, in the initial stages of the season, when Isak was available, Callum Wilson's absence was much felt, as the former hadn't been convincing at all. Wilson, who has been facing injury suspensions for quite a while now, playing his last game in May, had been an integral part of the Magpies unit, and his unavailability has been proving detrimental to the club.

While Callum Wilson is expected to be back after the international break, it could be one of the most crucial phases of the forward's career. Given that he has already turned 32, with his Magpies contract running down in the summer of 2025, the player would need to perform brilliantly if he wants to be featured in the club's future plans. Considering that Northern Echo reports suggest that Newcastle might not be favorable to extend Wilson beyond 2025, it is going to be a decisive time in the player's Toon career.

As it stands, with the player nearing his return, it is much more likely to take a few minutes to start kicking at his best level, which might derail his chances of continuing at the club. However, in such a scenario, Newcastle would want to sell the player, whom they signed for £20M in 2020, to get PSR benefits. While there is a possibility that the Magpies might have him leave for free, it is less likely, given the club's financial PSR constraints.

Overall, it looks much certain that veteran forward Callum Wilson might have to part ways with the club in the upcoming transfer windows. While it remains to be seen whether the player leaves for free in the summer of 2025 or makes an exit move in the January window, a lot more will depend on William Osula's preparation as a backup striker till then.
