Newcastle United are looking to add fresh competition to their goalkeeping department this summer.

After a long and demanding season, which ended with Champions League qualification and a historic Carabao Cup win, Eddie Howe’s side are preparing for the next step.

We must be competitive in the Champions League and get into a title race in the Premier League. This should the main two objectives for the upcoming season.

And finding a new goalkeeper is an important part to achieving those objectives for Eddie Howe and his men. Nick Pope has done well when fit, but injuries and age are a concern.

Martin Dubravka remains a solid backup, but the club now wants someone who can compete for the No.1 spot and offer long-term value.

A younger, more modern keeper would be ideal for the way Newcastle want to play.

With European football back on the cards and domestic expectations rising, having a reliable goalkeeper is more important than ever.

The club needs a shot-stopper who is not only confident with his hands but also comfortable playing out from the back.

According to CaughtOffside, Newcastle are now showing interest in Mile Svilar, who enjoyed a strong season in Italy with AS Roma.

The 25-year-old kept 16 clean sheets in the Serie A in 38 appearances for Roma last season and has caught the attention of several top clubs.

His contract talks with Roma have reportedly stalled, which has opened the door for potential suitors.

Newcastle are believed to admire the Serbian keeper and could take advantage of the situation, especially with Chelsea focusing on other targets like Mike Maignan.

That leaves Newcastle in a good position to move early. But, it won’t be an easy race though.

CaughtOffside claims that Manchester City, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, and Monaco are also keeping tabs on Svilar.

But if the Magpies act quickly and offer a clear path to first-team football, the project at St. James’ Park might be hard to turn down, especially with Champions League football on offer for Mile Svilar.
