Newcastle United are once again looking to strengthen the heart of their defence this summer – and one rising Premier League star has quickly emerged as a potential solution.

After a season disrupted by injuries and inconsistency at the back, the club are actively exploring options to partner Sven Botman long-term.

Fabian Schär is entering the final year of his deal, Jamaal Lascelles is out until 2025, and Dan Burn remains a makeshift option in central defence. A younger, top-level centre-back is clearly a priority.

While the Magpies have looked at players across Europe, attention is now turning to a player much closer to home – one who has quietly impressed with his composure, reading of the game, and consistency against top opposition.

According to GIVEMESPORT, Newcastle are among three Premier League sides keeping close tabs on the situation.

The report suggests that while his club are determined to keep him, a major offer from one of the big six could force their hand.

That has put Newcastle in direct competition with Chelsea and another unnamed top side.

But with a clear path to regular football and the potential lure of Champions League nights at St James’ Park, Newcastle could have the edge.

The identity of the target? Bournemouth’s Ilya Zabarnyi – the 22-year-old Ukrainian defender who has emerged as one of the best young centre-backs in the division.

With Dean Huijsen already leaving the Cherries for Real Madrid, Bournemouth are reluctant to sanction a second major departure – but Newcastle's interest is firm.

Zabarnyi’s maturity on the ball, ability to lead from deep, and solid one-on-one defending make him a standout candidate to join Eddie Howe’s squad.

If Newcastle are serious about pushing forward next season, the Bournemouth man could prove to be a critical piece of the puzzle.
